If you are an avid sports gamer like me, American Authors 2013 single “Best Day of My Life” was drilled into your head by FIFA 14. Six years later, the band has never replicated the success of that track–their only top 20 US hit–but they are still at it.
Their new single, “Champion” is probably the most fitting song for a video game the band has ever released. With its chorus of “in my coliseum, you’re my champion,” it is begging to be licensed by ESPN or EA Sports this fall. Unlike “Best Day of My Life”, gone are any hints of folk-inspiration, instead replaced by synth horns and a frankly unneeded rap verse from Beau Young Prince.
