Big Freedia at Brooklyn Bowl

big-freedia-at-brooklyn-bowlWhen you go to a Big Freedia show, you know what you are going to get. In the words of one of the Queen of Bounce’s own songs: Ass Everywhere.

Big Freedia has made it her mission to bring New Orleans bounce music to the masses. While bounce music has crossed over into mainstream “twerk culture”, Big Freedia sets herself apart with her gender-bending persona that infects the crowd with a freedom and energy that leaves everyone feeling empowered.

The show at Brooklyn Bowl started at 1:30am, and people on the other side of the venue were still finishing up bowling. But once Freedia took the stage with her twerk team of 2 girls and 2 boys – plus her 36 inch weave – everyone rushed to the front with hands up, ready to dance.

The best part of any Big Freedia show is the coordinated dancing and interaction of the people on stage. Big Freedia is a charismatic ringleader that pulls everyone around her up to her level. When she calls out “Rock around the Clock”, the party – on stage and off stage – really starts.

The diverse crowd of hipsters, dancers, off-duty strippers and hip hop fans are just waiting to be called on stage. Many girls in the audience wore outfits made for twerking, to the point where I wondered if they were planted in the audience. Either way, when the Queen of Bounce called for volunteers, Brooklyn answered.

The crowd is impressive, but Big Freedia’s dancers are the real show stealer. Like a professional, they put in work with a smile and an eye roll, giving lots of attitude while having fun. These girls rock the crowd and keep it moving like none other, for a dazzling and sexy performance of athleticism.

Some people may feel all this ass shaking and dropping it low is inappropriate, or demeaning. But when you take a hard look at the positivity on stage, and the joy in the crowd, it’s easy to see why Big Freedia has a die-hard fan following. Bounce music has found a champion in Big Freedia, and being immersed in the frenetic ass-shaking energy – even for just a few hours – is uplifting.
