Much of Bruno Mars‘ greatest successes have been retro-styled to the point of near parody. There is the James Brown aping “Uptown Funk,” the roots reggae inspired “The Lazy Song,” the doo-wop influenced “Marry You,” and most recently “Finesse (Remix).” Cardi B and Bruno Mars take you back to the 90s of Jheri curls and parachute pants with the new jack swing track. Sounding somewhere between Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison” and Salt-N-Pepa, the track feels like a Funny or Die video more than an honest attempt to make a good song. Regardless, “Finesse (Remix)” will probably be a hit but don’t expect to hear the Teddy Riley-style of production to be back in vogue.
