Charli XCX & Danny Brown @ SPIN Magazine Year in Music Party – New York

charli-xcx-spin-magazine-year-in-music-partyThe SPIN Magazine Year in Music party went down at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, featuring Danny Brown and Charli XCX. I’m a big fan of Charli XCXand Danny Brown separately, so seeing them together was pretty much the best Tuesday night ever.

Charli XCX took the stage wearing a full latex coat, latex skirt, and cotton sports bra. She used the outfit to her advantage, yelling the hipster crowd. “Give me a little more, I’m wearing latex!” It took everyone a few songs, but even the coolest of the cool kids had to response to Charli’s amazing energy.

She played 6 song song off her album as well as her hit with Icona Pop “I love it” and her new single in the UK “Superlove”. But the highlight was when she took the breakup anthem “How Can I” and added a Sleigh Bells riff. The effect was rockstar devastation onstage.

Danny Brown came out on the first song his DJ Skywlkr played, and started head bopping along with the crowd. I was actually pretty sad we didn’t get an AIM-sound trap music set from Skywlkr. He’s not only one of the best producers of a new, electronic-heavy sound, but he turns the place the fuck up with his arm dancing.

Danny played all his best songs including “I Will”, “Dope Song”, “Kush Coma”. During Express Yourself, Charli came out to the side of the stage to watch, dressed in all pink latex. Her dancing was at once adorable and awesome, and her energy added to the strong stage presence of Danny.

The moment many fans had been waiting for finally happened at the end of the show. Charli joined Danny onstage for their song “Float On” off Danny’s album “Old”

The two had a great energy, and the rookie Charli held her own against the more seasoned Danny. It was a great way to end the show, and the blending of trippy electro/ pop/ gutter rap was definitely one of the top 2013 trends. Kudos to SPIN for bring two great artists together at just the right time.
