Common “War”

common-warRemember when Common released “I Used to Love H.E.R.”? The track was regarded as one of the best in hip hop history for its extended metaphors and social commentary. “War” is not “I Used to Love H.E.R.” although it seems like he wants it to be. “War” is a metaphor for gun violence in Chicago. Unlike “I Used to Love H.E.R.” which never exclusively says what its about, “War” is not only ham-handed lyrically but then Common does a spoken word outro explaining the track. It feels a little too blatant and overdone for an emcee who has previously impressed with his subtlety and intelligence.
