The legendary hip-hopper, cousin of Ice Cube, founder of the west-coast hip hop conglomerate, Hieroglyphics, and overall phenomenal musical artist known as Del the Funky Homosapien is back with an album produced entirely by Parallel Thought entitled Attractive Sin. Just one year since his last solo release, Del brings the world some new, fresh music, with a completely different sound than any of his past projects. Diverging from the norm can be tricky to master, but Del, along with Parallel Thought do a fantastic job with this project.
What is most notable about this album is not necessarily Del and his rapping, but the production from Parallel Thought. The heavy horns, jazzy notes of brass instruments and pianos project themselves from every beat. Even some electric guitar is thrown in the mix; the layers are endless. The beats are mind-blowingly complex and that is just what is to love about them, especially on tracks like “Ownership,” “1520 Sedgewick,” and “Getto Drillin.”
Del’s rhyming is just as solid as it has always been. His method of rhyming is a little different, in part to the different style of beats he’s rapping on. Nonetheless, since I Wish My Brother George Was Here to Deltron 3030 to Attractive Sin, Del the Funky Homosapien has been an incredible emcee who always strives to bring something new to the game, regardless of what’s hot.
Overall, Attractive Sin is a high quality release but it’s nothing new lyrically. The beats are dope, no doubt, but Del doesn’t seem to push his lyricism to any new limits. After so many years in the game, he could have pushed just a little bit more to go harder in the proverbial paint to accompany the nearly flawless production.
