Dirty Vegas: Electric Love
Dirty Vegas‘ debut single, 2001’s “Days Go By” went to number one in the US and number 16 in their native UK. The group was not able to recreate that success and ultimately disbanded in 2005. In 2009, the group reunited and their first album since that time is Electric Love.
Dirty Vegas has always been a house group but Electric Love shows them expanding their sound. Call it maturing but the group takes some real chances. The album’s opening track “Little White Doves” sounds like a dream collaboration between The Killers and Empire of the Sun. The track features live drums which gives it a decidedly not house feel and Steve Smith gives the vocals his best Brandon Flowers impression. The gamble works for Dirty Vegas as the song is one of the stand out tracks on the album.
Other more traditional house tracks do not fair quite as well. For example, “Emma” is kind of a house love ballad but it ends up feel flat and uninspired. The same goes for “Today” which constantly seems like it is building towards a big arena-sized chorus but just never seems to get there.
Luckily, those two songs are really the only disappointments on the album. Otherwise, Electric Love is a fun and satisfying album from these UK veterans. Dirty Vegas has never been a critically successful group but I could see this album having some critics swooning.
