Jhené Aiko: Chilombo

Jhené Aiko‘s March 6th release, is inspired by a recent break up with Big Sean but maintains her signature laid back style. Chilombo is a declaration of Aiko’s new found independence and an ode to her family’s surname.

While writing and recording this album, Jhené longed for a zen like and thought provoking space. The 32-year-old Los Angeles-native retreated to the hills of Hawaii to be surrounded by lush landscapes, wildlife, crystals and other spiritual totems. Aiko’s delicate vocals blend beautifully with the sounds of her ancient signing bowls.

The album’s first single, “Trigger” featuring Big Sean, is soft yet aggressive. This track gives the listener a glimpse into her thought process while dealing with the frustration of loving, losing and missing someone. The latest single “P***y Fairy”, is a ballad about pleasing and maintaining a sexual connection with your partner. It provides melodic word play over a berceuse like beat. She affectionately exclaims, “I’ll hypnotize you with this p***y, Now you feel like you can fly!” Please listen to the album version, radio edits do this song no justice.

Jhené Aiko enlisted help from fellow songstress H.E.R. to serve up “B.S.”. The song’s silky smooth lyrics about regaining your former self glide effortlessly over the 808. Aiko is an avid cannabis user, “Tryna Smoke” has a few suggestions on how to gain relief from life’s issues. A good listen even if you choose not to indulge. Future and Miguel both provide supportive male energy in “Happiness Over Everything (H.O.E.)”, a track encouraging women to embrace their sexual prowess. The album’s other songs include features from heavy hitters like Ty Dollar $ign, Nas and John Legend.

Chilombo is a compilation of ballads that mixes the chill vibe of the 90’s with the new age. The album is worthy of continuous play. Listening to Chilombo makes you feel like you are floating on a cloud of Marathon OG above the Pacific Ocean.
