Ladytron: Gravity The Seducer
Over the last decade, Ladytron has carved out a niche for themselves. By combining elements of new wave, shoegaze, and Europop, they created something moody, spacious, and danceable. The band continues to grow on their fifth studio album, Gravity The Seducer.
The album’s lead single “Ace Of Hz” follows in the lineage of great singles from Ladytron. Similar to their 2005 single “Destroy Everything You Touch,” the track is a moody dance track that is reminiscent of 80s darkwave bands like Siouxsie and the Banchees. But the track does not show a lot of growth in the band, its basically a re-hashing of what they have been doing for nearly a decade now.
The real growth on the album come on tracks like “Ambulances.” The track shows shades Bjork with its acapella group-esque harmonies and hip hop-style hi-hats. It is not the typical dance fare from Ladytron yet it seems to fit very well into the group’s cannon.
Gravity The Seducer, as a whole, fits well into the group’s cannon but only part of it seems to further the group’s sound. While it seems obvious that Ladytron is trying to recreate some of what made Witching Hour such a success, there are songs like “Ambulances” and album opener, “White Elephants” that show Ladytron is moving forward their sound gradually.
