Lana Del Rey “Doin’ Time (Sublime cover)”

Although born and raised in New York, Lana Del Rey has been metamorphing into a California artist for some time now. If “Brooklyn Baby” was her last gasp of New York, he covering of the patron saints of Long Beach, Sublime competes the process. “Doin Time” is probably the easiest Sublime song for Del Rey to cover. The original was a stretch to Sublime’s established sound mixing elements of dub, trip hop, and hip hop to create something far from their ska roots. For Del Rey’s part, she does not change that much from the original. The production is updated and a little less dubby but its not as drastic a change as when she cover Nirvana‘s “Heart Shaped Box” say. Still, the cover works very well with Del Rey’s sultry vocals taking the place of late Bradley Nowell.
