We aren’t ready for RTJ2. We just aren’t. Shit is going to be nuts.
Killer Mike and El-P have been running the show since 2012’s R.A.P. Music. El-P’s crossover from a sole focus on production for that album to working double duty on 2013’s Run The Jewels self-titled capitalized on their incredible chemistry and evolved both artists mutually. RTJ has given Killer Mike new visibility to break out of the supporting role and underground fame he’s received as part of the Dungeon Family; El-P’s turned into a true rapper/producer, evening out the difference in skill level between his two talents.
“Oh My Darlin Don’t Cry” continues the momentum of “Blockbuster Night Pt. 1” by setting the duo in a grimier, more barebones atmosphere with a third-act facelift for the history books. There’s something everlastingly fun about these two together – perhaps their breadth of personality is what keeps RTJ more playful than similar partnerships from more established and vertically-oriented artists (2011’s Watch The Throne was certainly commercially excellent, but felt more like an arranged marriage than a passionate affair).
RTJ is taking the party on the road this Fall in support of RTJ2, dropping for free on October 28 through Mass Appeal. Dates under the track.
