#TuesdayTop10: Grammys Wrap Up

Sunday night brought the annual Grammy Awards ceremonies to the Staple Center in Los Angeles. While every publication on the planet is finding a way to shit on the Grammy ceremonies, I want to countdown a couple reason that Grammys were actually worth watching.

prince, grammys10. Prince
Prince makes the list because 1) he’s fucking Prince and 2) he showed up at the Grammys in a hoodie, sunglasses, and a cane.

miguel, grammys09. Miguel
On a night that was set up to be Frank Ocean‘s night, Miguel ended up stealing the show. Ocean performed “Forrest Gump” only memorable for how horrendous it sounded. Meanwhile Miguel‘s performance of “Adorn”–which also won for Best R&B Song–exceeded all expectations.

Kelly Clarkson, grammys08. Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson was nominated for three Grammys and she won the biggest one, Best Pop Vocal Album for Stronger. The real reason she makes the countdown is because she sang the shit out of Patti Page‘s “Tennessee Waltz” and Carole King‘s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

lumineers, grammys07. The Lumineers
The Lumineers were nominated for two awards and even though they did not win, they certainly cashed in. Not only did they performed “Hey Ho” admirably but then the song was in half the commercials broadcasted.

bob marley, rihanna, grammys06. Bob Marley
Bob Marley was the only person to get a tribute that didn’t die in the past year. For that reason alone, he is a big winner. His tribute was also appropriately joyous. Although it started oddly with Bruno Mars performing “Locked Out of Heaven” with Sting, once Damien and Ziggy Marley came out the reggae vibes began flowing and it was all smiles.

fun, lena dunham, grammys05. fun.
fun. was tied for most nominations with six. Although they only won two and their performance of “Carry On” was only okay, the fact that they were hanging out with Lena Dunham all night made them pretty cool in my book.

chick corea, dave brubeck, grammys04. Chick Corea
Not only did Chick Corea bring home two Grammys but he was part of one of the best tributes of the night, the tribute to Dave Brubeck. Teaming up with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Garrett, the trio blasted through Brubeck’s classic “Take Five” to the delight of every jazz fan.

katy perry, grammys03. Katy Perry
As twitter user, cgz79 said “Katy Perry‘s dress is mankind’s greatest achievement. It makes walking on the moon look pedestrian in comparison” but that’s not what puts her on the highlight list. Her quip while handing out the Best New Artist award of “I was never even nominated in this category, and I have my own eyelash line. Take that Bon Iver” was the (intentionally) funniest thing of the night.

elton john, levon helms, grammys02. Levon Helms
The Band leader might have only been at the Grammys in spirit but the all-star tribute to him brought out tasteful use of star-power. Zac Brown and Elton John both held down verses aptly enough, but Mavis Staples and the Alabama Shakes‘ Brittany Howard truly brought down the house. The two leading ladies seemed to almost have a rivalry going with Staples getting the last word in but Brittany Howard bested her in performance, at least on this night.

black keys, grammys01. Dan Auerbach
Dan Auerbach was the big winner of the night; not only because he brought home four Grammys–the most of any individual–but because his performance with The Black Keys was one of the few tolerable moments. Teaming up with New Orleans legends, Dr. John and Perservation Hall Jazz Band, the Keys banged out an inspired version of “Lonely Boy” which won for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song.

Booo, I wanted Florence & The Machine to win the Best Female Vocals…but yeah, otherwise, I agree. Also: OMG Alicia Keys and Maroon 5. I’m not usually a fan of either, but wow.

You can never go wrong when Prince, Sting, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, & Maroon 5 are all involved on the same television program!
