Wavves “No Shade”

While many of the tracks released from the forthcoming album, You’re Welcome have seen Wavves drift further away from their origins, “No Shade” seems to reinvent their beach punk. The first verse is vocals, static, and choppy drums. It sounds like you are listening to King of the Beach and your headphones are malfunctioning but come through on just the chorus. The second verse is a little more put together but the guitar is muffles and distorting. It all culminates in a guitar solo full of clipping that almost gives the impression of a CD skipping.

The effects are interesting but their use feels like artsy for the sake of being artsy. They don’t necessarily add anything to “No Shade;” at best, they distract from it.
