American experimental act Xiu Xiu and Italy’s (r), a project described as “a mighty cocktail of introspective-ambient-noise and lyrical song-writing” took turns covering ZZ Top songs on this split 7” released by Polyvinyl earlier last month. The idea for the record came during Xiu Xiu’s appearance on the A.V. Club’s Undercover series, which has artists take turns drawing from a list of predetermined songs, thereby creating a greater opportunity for unlikely pairings. When it came time for Xiu Xiu to select a track, frontman Jamie Stewart was left only with, “…a bunch of 90s RnB that I was never into or lame-o indie rock.” The duo selected “Sharp Dressed Man” and the results were simultaneously frenetic and entertaining.
