The knock on Childish Gambino has never been a lack of talent but rather a lack of originality. His debut album, Camp was knocked as a Kanye West ripoff. His sophomore album, Because the Internet was seen as being heavily influenced by Drake. On his new track “Sober,” the Community actor is seen getting further away from rapping and closer to alt-R&B. Reminiscent of Frank Ocean, the track features no vocals besides singing and features some lengthy instrumental parts. “Sober” is adequate for the type of music it is striving to emulate but it is hard to see fans of Camp getting on board with this.
