Dreamaway “Back To California”

Indie pop collective, Dreamaway just released their third single, “Back To California.” The track features shimmering synth arpeggios, acoustic guitar, and driving drums. Lead singer/songwriter, Ben Talmi describes the track as “about accepting the change in someone else” but the song is quite self-referential as well. During the chanting chorus of “back to California,” Talmi interjects “baby don’t be cliche,” a recognition of a seeming American dream to end up in the golden state. Seemingly in reference to that, the duo of Margaret Sohn and Kate Steinberg interject the chanting to sing “don’t be the one that gets away,” a cliche in and of itself. These little references, let you enjoy the upbeat pop song without rolling your eyes thinking “ugh, not another song romanticizing California.”
