On the same day their newest album, The Nothing That Is, was released, deathcore legends Fit For An Autopsy took the stage at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg Florida. Following in support was Judiciary, Sylosis, Distant, and Bodysnatcher.
Texas based Judiciary opened up the night, and immediately opened up the pits! They played a five song setlist that packed a punch, two of the songs being from their 2023 album Flesh & Blood. Next on the bill was Sylosis, a British heavy metal band, who have been M.I.A.for the last 17 years. They re-entered the scene last year with their latest album, A Sign Of Things To Come, and the majority of their five song setlist came from that album. If there is power in words, and the show they put on is a sign of things to come, their comeback will easily reinstate them into the metal playing field.
Third on stage was Distant, a Dutch Downtempo Deathcore band who brought a whole new energy to the crowd. I was enthralled by this band from the very first note, the band’s energy, the insane gutturals and note changes from lead Alan Grja, had the crowd hanging on every riff. Distant celebrated ten years in the music scene and have only gotten stronger. They push boundaries in the genre and I know they will continue to be the torch bearers of the genre. Following that act was Florida’s own “Murda Music”, Bodysnatcher with their iconic song “King of the Rats,” greeting the crowd with, “What’s up bitch, f*ck you”. This final opener brought breakdowns, dual vocals from lead Kyle Medina and Drummer Chris Whited, and some amazing callouts that amplified crowd participation. Their ten song setlist was a mix that had fans old and new moving along with it. Front-man Kyle Medina may be small, but his voice is mighty; commanding the crowd throughout the entire set. Since it was a home-town show for them, the crowd was right there with them, screaming, singing, and headbanging along.
Closing out the night were headliners, Fit For An Autopsy. These deathcore legends have only gotten better with age; their eleven song setlist brought a little piece for every fan. They started out the night with a single from their newest album, “Lower Purpose,” which gives 5 seconds of static reprieve, before the band sends you into their world. A world filled with heavy hitting riffs, combative drums, and the iconic vocals of Joseph Badolato. They played iconic songs such as “Two Towers,” “Far From Heaven,” and “Black Mammoth.” They closed out the night with Two Towers and had every person moving in the pit when the final breakdown hit, and the guitar instrumentals played the band off the stage.
