On October 16th, rapper Hemlock Ernst and producer Icky Reels will release their collaborative album, Studying Absence. The latest single from the album is “Remains.” Featuring Elucid of Armand Hammer, the track is an interesting mix of experimental hip hop production and unorthodox rapping. Hemlock Ernst, better known as Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring, haphazardly moves from rapping on the beat to getting slightly off kilter which is seems to be done intentionally; I’m not trying to impugn his skills as a rapper. You can tell because Elucid’s concluding verse has a similar cadence albeit with a more typical rapper’s voice.
