One month into 2012, and all I’ve learned is that a groundhog saw his shadows. Looks like 6 more weeks of winter. Oh, well. In an effort to try to cheer those of us up who are suffering from SAD, let’s jump into this weeks Video Rewind.

Jeff the Brotherhood “Bummer”

Reminiscent of old home videos, Jeff the Brotherhood shot their video for “Bummer” while in Hawaii. All I can say is, they sure look like they had some great fun. Drinking coconut water, surfing, fishing, skateboarding. The song is the perfect soundtrack to the video. It seems more like two friends on a lacksadaisical adventure than anything else. The song is laidback, too. The only bummer here is that their trip must have come to an end.

Dare Dukes Band “Meet You at the Bus”

Puppy love. That’s what we got going on here. Sitting next to that pretty girl. Holding her hand. Teasing one another. A funtastic bicycle ride. “Two lovely creatures pressed against the plexiglass”. If we ever get to meet one, just one, person who can share a day like this with us, we should all consider ourselves lucky.

Nada Surf “When I Was Young”

I heard this song from Nada Surf a while back. I really do like it. The video shows more of a youthful puppy love budding romance. All lost by being stuck on a subway train that takes you away from the girl. This young man makes the most of it, by running the sidewalks of the city with a big ole’ grin on his face. This is the kind of self discovery I’m thristing for right now. It’s a touching song with an interesting visual aid here in the adventures of a misfit prep school adolescent.

iAm1 “Watching”

This is an interesting video. The animation here is brilliant covering different styles. The song is good too. iAm1‘s vocals give a personal, intimate feel tot he track. And the animation of a dancing man drawn in outline gives the sense of a hollow feeling to the track. Not in terms of lacking anything inside, but more about how sometimes we can just feel empty. But, for every down there must be an up. Like when the rocket takes off. You’ll see.

Unicycle Loves You “Piranha”

I don’t know what it feels like to have a piranha, or entire school of piranha attack you. But this video for “Piranha” by Unicycle Loves You might just be the visual equivalent. A lot of filmschool style, let’s just point a camera and see what happens antics going on here. But then again, I don’t think the song itself is really about anything. No message here, just jamming away. Hope you all had a good week. Good luck on your weekends.

On it’s fifth album, Feel The Sound, Imperial Teen is full, bright, and tight. Given the critical acclaim of past efforts and the groups from whence its members came – Faith No More, Sister Double Happiness, the Wrecks, among others – that should come as no surprise. The cynic in me, though, didn’t want to believe a band known for it’s youthful, poppy sound could be youthful or poppy sixteen years after its inception. Within the confines of such a rigid structure, how much can really be expressed? Pop music, for all the tricks and tropes at its disposal, can only do and say so much before it comes full circle and bites its own butt. Given the short shelf-life of the average song, album, and even career, the industry standard holds that bands combat irrelevance by producing constantly. It’s a methodology that holds no water for Imperial Teen. With five years since their last album, the members are clearly glad to be back together, lifting each other with the perspective gained in their time apart.
Shades of Imperial Teen can be heard in contemporary critical darlings like Phoenix and Cut Copy. Both deliver their brand of high energy pop with precision and charisma. Neither of these bands deliver precision or charisma as well as Imperial Teen, though. From the opening moments of “Runaway”, the band is of the same mind. Propelled by a swirling keyboard hook and held up by a meaty backbeat, it culminates with a gloriously harmonious vocal movement until the song is clipped. I choose to believe that harmony continued in perfect accord well after the engineer stopped the tape and went home for the night. On “No Matter What You Say”, the breathy “Ah-Ah” section of the chorus speaks volumes of the band’s ability to do a lot with oh so little, expressing both wonder and resilience in those two short syllables. Clocking in at 40:40, the songs on Feel The Sound are right out of the pop playbook and right to the point. Within those confines, though, Imperial Teen project a warmth and lack of cynicism that is as refreshing as it is unique.
For all the limitations of the pop palette, Imperial Teen manages to find freshness by refusing to box in their raw, live sound. It’s a sound that, at it’s biggest, wants to be even bigger. With tools as old as the hook and the chorus, Imperial Teen commands a level of synchronicity that they can will in any direction, tipping any box that would seek to contain it, spilling transcendent harmony all over the damn place.
It turns out, Freedom Fry is actually kind of good. Their single, “Earthquake” will be released on Valentine’s Day but you can stream it now. The track is a combination of minimalistic instrumentation, driving drums, and sweetly sung female vocals.

What are some of your earliest musical influences?
RiVerse: My first musical obsession was Hall & Oates around the age of 4. Hip hop kind of ran my life all through my teens and still works as the foundation for everything I do.
Macabee: My first cassette was Alvin and the Chipmunks singing Michael Jackson‘s greatest hits. The Beatles were also a big early influence. After that, I started listening to a lot of hip hop and house.

How did you get into DJing?
RiVerse: Being into hip hop as both a fan and in a creative aspect, it naturally evolved into DJing. So it started with listening to everything I could get my hands on, then that turned into making pause tapes and eventually I ended up buying a cheap pair of turntables from the back of The Source. Around that time the independent hip hop scene was really blowing up as well and a lot of the music was being put out strictly on vinyl. So necessity played a role as well.
Macabee: I played guitar in an incredibly fun band in high school, which was forced to split once we all graduated and moved to the four corners of the earth. I quickly got into production on the MPC, and soon after that I started DJing, as a way to be a one man band and keep churning out music. In a way I was DJing since I was young though; making mixtapes on a dual-deck boombox using my huge collection of cassingles.

What equipment/programs do you use to create music?
RiVerse: We DJ with Serato. For production, we both started out on the MPC-2000XL but almost everything we do now is on Ableton Live.

In a place like NYC where there is an overabundance of DJs, how do you think Its Overture stands out?
RiVerse: It’s definitely a crowded marketplace but whenever we spin, our goal is always to play to the crowd while still essentially doing “us.”
Macabee: I think our meticulous track selection is one of the main ways we set ourselves apart from most other DJs. We definitely pride ourselves on relentlessly dropping jam after timeless jam and never wasting a moment with “filler”.

What are some of your favorite records to spin during DJ sets?
RiVerse: That’s a difficult one to answer because it depends largely on what type of crowd we’re playing to. Every genre/crowd offers us the opportunity to play some things we love, either because we know they’ll kill or because we love sneaking in things people might not know.

You created an exclusive mix for StGA, can you describe a little bit about the concept behind it and some of the song selections?
Macabee: We wanted to try to distill the arc of a night into a 30 minute mix using songs from different genres and eras. We often try to do more than just quietly mix one record into another so the mix also includes a lot of new blends and many of the transitions add extra layers, samples or call backs to the previous track. A number of times on this mix we literally create a dialogue of sorts between the two tracks we’re mixing, which is something we like to do whenever possible.
RiVerse: While not an all out “cut and paste” mix, we’ve always been drawn to a more manipulative style of DJing……when it’s done well, of course. As we both said earlier, hip hop informs much of our aesthetic and a lot of that comes out in our penchant for flipping samples, both in our tracks and mixes. So we always try to incorporate that into whatever we do whether it’s through blends, content-conscious mixes, etc because we feel like we don’t hear a lot of that style anymore. Because while the whole age of the “mash up” did some good things for bringing an all-bets-are-off approach to sampling, it also created a stigma because a lot of it was (and still is) done badly: out of key, off beat, incoherent, crunk-acapella-over-indy-jam-of-the-week kind of things. So we’re trying to bring it back to a place that’s more reputable. More Prince Paul than Girl Talk.

What is next for Its Overture?
We’re going to keep releasing remixes and blends/mash ups every couple of weeks and we’ve got another volume of our Classic Rap mix that we’re working on that we’re really excited about. We also have plans for a real all genre, all style, cut-and-paste mix that will hopefully do justice to what we think DJing and sample-heavy production can be.
Aside from that, we plan to keep putting things out that continue to establish our range. Our love for all types of music enable us to move between genres and styles pretty naturally so we want to continue to build on that. We’ve done reworks of everyone from Phish and Grateful Dead to Company Flow (as a Drum-N-Bass remix, no less) and Sister Nancy. Cut Copy and Modular Records gave us props for our edit of “Sun God”, a lot of old school hip hop blogs showed love for our Classic Rap mix and most of our club-friendly remixes and bootlegs continue to get us attention. So we’re proud of that range and want to keep trying to bring a universal standard of quality to everything we do.

All aboard for Chicago quartet Dastardly’s new EP, Bury Me in the Country. From a dead stop “Freight Train,” takes an opening minute to shake off the bonds of gravity, and much like the unmistakable sound of train cars clacking together under the strain of locomotion the album lurches forward in an unconventional time signature. There is a definite sense of orchestrated discord to the opening tune, something akin to Thelonious Monk’s off timing which displays a musical intelligence that is quickly disbanded for a more traditional format as the album picks up speed.
Track two, “Fever,” is the clear choice for a single, with a stand up bass line that will ricochet around in your head for days and harmonizing reminiscent of any back porch whisky tippling, finger picking string circle…Wait for it, and enter the yodel! I’m not saying it makes the song, it just makes the song dirty.
Now passing through “Brief Thoughts on Death,” a one-horse town we barrel through whistle blaring. “Every time I see someone 85 I wonder how the hell they’re still alive.” Like all good Mid-Western acts, Dastdardly has an unhealthy fascination with their own mortality, and god bless them for it on this track. Between questioning relevancy of heaven and hell and blaming a higher-power for all their problems Dastardly cleverly disguises a lament behind humor.
Next stop, “Dead Birdhouse Blues,” “Missouri you’re a cold and miserable fucker,” the perfect chorus for any love song narrative, delivered with an intense and almost neurotic flip flopping from hopeless love to outright disgust. You can comfort yourself he’s talking about the state and not the girl, (right?) that just manages to fit in a jibe against New Jersey before closing out and coming to my personal favorite track.
“Dirtnap,” (Uncouth Hillbilly Gets What’s Coming to Him) takes the piss outta all the posturing and pretension behind modern music circles, a la Dead Milkmen in its ravings, the rant culminates in violent acts and public nudity, an eventual arrest where you realize the conductor’s keeled over and this train’s running away on us. After the glorious collision when the train jumps the tracks, you can rest assured Dasdardly will bury us all, deep in the country.
For added kicks, check out the group’s blog. These are clever guys, well worth letting into your stereo for a play or two.
