“You ain’t the first to realize, you ain’t the first to look in my eyes,” begins the title track of DIIV‘s newest album, Is the Is Are, due out February 5th. Zachary Cole Smith’s voice is even and mellow, a haunting near-whisper above a shimmering bass line and infectious drum fills. The song is classic DIIV, moving fast enough to keep things interesting but slow enough that you’re able to savor the moment. It’s not catchy from the get-go, but upon multiple listens you’ll find yourself humming along with ease. DIIV are difficult to pigeonhole, and being from New York City they don’t play by anyone else’s rules. This bold uniqueness is their greatest asset, and “Is the Is Are” is a fine example of that.
