Minneapolis-bred, Brooklyn-based hip-hop artist Ecid is preparing to release his new album, How To Fake Your Own Death on May 12th. Surviving the Golden Age is excited to premiere the video for the single “Gentrified Utopia.” Directed by Mercies May for Strange and Distant Pictures, the video features VHS tape imperfections over an actually very modern video. Pop-up tongue-in-cheek political slogans appear around Ecid as he has a field day rapping in an abandoned gas station. The re-watchability of the video is so high because there are slogans that pop up in the background that aren’t even obvious with the first watch through. With repeated viewings, you really get how insouciant and subversive the video really is. It helps that the track is dope too!
