Gaspar Sanz “Cheryl”

Syndey four-piece, Gaspar Sanz just released their first single of 2020, “Cheryl.” The band explains “this song was inspired by a cat called Cheryl who used to live with Jimmy (singer) and Sammy (drummer). The meows that are featured in the song are from Cheryl herself. Jimmy followed her around the apartment with a microphone for about half an hour to capture them.”

The song’s verses have a guitar-driven indie rock is reminiscent to mid-aughts British bands like The Fratellis or The Wombats. The chorus, however, goes full lush pop sounding somewhere between Tame Impala and Empire of the Sun. It’s a nice dichotomy that really shows the band’s range all in one track.
