On their new single, “Sophisticated iTunes,” Charleston SC emcee’s Langston Hughes III attempt to bring back 90s hip hop mixtape culture. With legendary DJ Red Alert recording the song’s intro, the track mixes R&B vibes with hip hop beats and even a Susanne Vega interpolation to create what the group calls “Adult Contemporary Head Nod Music.” Essentially, the track sounds like a lost J Dilla beat with lyrics that are reminiscent of artists like Common or Talib Kweli.
