I was listening to an interesting conversation recently on SiriusXM’s Hip Hop Nation, where Renada Romain was discussing how R&B rarely exists on its own anymore. Instead it always seems to be attached to hip hop, like its not worthy of being its own genre. We see that with Lion Babe‘s new track “Jump Hi.” With its boom bap beat and its glitchy soul production, the track feels completed by Lion Babe’s vocals which sound somewhere between Macy Gray and Mary J. Blige. Childish Gambino‘s final verse feels tacked on; not that his verse is not well composed or performed, but it feels like a surplus to requirements. Lion Babe doesn’t need any rappers to make a banger.
