Lou Monroe “Wicked Game” (Chris Isaak Cover)

Lou Monroe is one of those bands whose name sounds like a solo artist. In this case, the name represents singer Olivia Barry Coder and film score composer, Michael James Lee. As you may expect, their cover of Chris Isaak‘s classic “Wicked Game” is filled with dramatic synth pads and trip hop drums. While most of Coder’s credentials lie in the musical theater genre, he vocals are not overly dramatized; instead they are quiet and vulnerable with the occasional flourish that sounds a little too much like Born to Die-era Lana Del Rey.

While I’m sure those things will get ironed out as the duo continues on, “Wicked Game” stands as a stark and beautiful debut single.
