Animal Collective is so Baltimore that their best known album, Merriweather Post Pavilion is named after the city’s outdoor amphitheater.

Double Dagger09. Double Dagger
Post-punk trio, Double Dagger may have only released three albums in their nine year careers but their self-proclaimed “graphicdesigncore” lives on.

Although the band met at while studying art at East Carolina University in Greenville, Future Islands relocated to Baltimore in 2008.

Wye Oak07. Wye Oak
Indie folk duo, Wye Oak is actually named after the honorary state tree of Maryland, and the largest white oak tree in the United States. They, also, have the privileged of being the only Maryland band on Merge Records.

06. Ponytail
For six years, Ponytail was the art-rock band-du-jour of Baltimore. They were named “Best Live Band” by Baltimore City Paper in September 2007 and “Best Band” in September 2008.

Dan Deacon05. Dan Deacon
Dan Deacon is arguably one of the most critically lauded artists from Baltimore. His 2007 album, Spiderman of the Rings was ranked as number 24 on the website’s Best Albums of 2007. Deacon’s 2009 album, Bromst was also ranked #46 in Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2009.

spank rock04. Spank Rock
Baltimore rapper, Spank Rock rose to fame with his 2006 album YoYoYoYoYo. The album’s track, “Bump” was named Single of the Year by Xfm London breakfast DJ Lauren Laverne.

03. e-dubble
e-dubble has become an indie hip hop landmark in Baltimore. His “Freestyle Fridays” series and hardest-working-man-in-hip-hop work ethic has earned blogosphere accolades and endless respect from peers.

lungfish02. Lungfish
Formed in 1987, Lungfish is Baltimore’s longest running post-hardcore band. With the majority of the 12 albums being released on legendary Dischord Records, its no wonder the band is so well respected.

Beach House01. Beach House
Dream pop duo, Beach House are the most critically acclaimed modern band from Baltimore. All of their albums to date have been included in Pitchforkmedia’s end of the year “best of” lists, a feat not easily duplicated.
