Philadelphia musician, Barney Cortez released his latest single, “Protein” last month. Cortez describes his style as “liquid rock n roll” and “avant-soul.” What that roughly seems to mean is a mixture of 80s new wave and post-punk. “Protein” mixes chugging palm muter guitars, sliding synths, and half-sung/half-spoken verses. It ends up sounding like The Cars or at least something produced by Ric Ocasek.
