Angolan artist, Bonga recorded his song, “Mona Ki Ngi Xica” in 1972. A song protesting the Portuguese occupation of Angola, it mixed elements of bossa nova and semba, a traditional Angolan music. Fourteen-year-old producer, Afia Verde just released a remix of the song. Taking Bonga’s delicate yearning vocals, he places them over emotive pianos, creeping synth-bass, and a handclap-filled four-on-the-floor beat. It takes one of Angola’s most enduring protest anthems to the dancefloor in a tactful way.
