Hi Fashion: Sprechen Sie Hi-Fashion?
The duo known as Hi Fashion met at a club in New York’s Lower East Side. Is there anything else you really need to know? Their debut EP is Sprechen Sie Hi-Fashion?.
The EP is filled with sassy dance anthems. “Amazing!” seems like the gay anthem successor to Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way.” On the track, lead singer Jen DM rap/sings “I don’t give two hoots if you don’t like my boots because I know they’re amazing/and I don’t give a shit if you don’t like my tits because I know they’re amazing.” The lyrics may be more crass than Lady Gaga but it still has her general attitude.
The highlight of the EP for me is “I’m Not Madonna.” The track is a humorous tale about how Jen DM is constantly getting mistaken for Madonna. She rap/sings “everyone thinks I’m Madonna/It’s becoming quite a strain/Dolce and Gabbana keeps calling me for every new campaign/When I tell them they’re mistaken and simply can not do it/they shoot a girl who’s 24 and attach my head to it.”
The tracks are dripping with insouciance and it makes them all the more likable. While I can not rave about Hi Fashion’s musical proficiency or creativity, Sprechen Sie Hi-Fashion? is a really fun debut EP.
