Killjoy & The Cutthroats “Golden Years for a Gutter Punk”

When you hear a song is titled “Golden Years for a Gutter Punk” and it’s done by a band called Killjoy & The Cutthroats, I don’t think its unreasonable to assume you’re going to hear some fast, loud punk. So when the song starts with deep strings and glockenspiel, you have every right to be confused. This is not a head fake though, as the band’s description of the track will attest: it is “a slow burning brood that turns into an anthemic chorus.” Between the strings and Kendal Killjoy’s steely baritone vocals, the song is reminiscent of the National but with a strong focus on catchy hooks. So although it might not be what you were expecting, it is a pleasant surprise.
