Needy Beast “Myself Again”

There is something whimsical and jarring about songs whose only vocals are spoken word. Great examples of this would be Velvet Underground‘s “The Gift” or Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free.” LA-based Needy Beast‘s new single, “Myself Again” is somewhere in between those disparate tracks. The instrumental is quirky synth pop reminiscent of LCD Soundsystem with just a tinge of new age synth pads. The vocals which are done by Courtship Ritual’s Monica Salazar are a fairly deadpan reading of Frank O’Hara’s “Mayakovsky.” While the poem in written form includes many exclamation points, to hear “my temple, it’s throbbing!” read with almost a wry smile makes the meditation on heartbreak and existential crisis sound more like an inner monolog on Daria.
