Selena Gomez “Bad Liar”

The headline surrounding Selena Gomez‘s new single “Bad Liar” is the sampled bass-line from The Talking Heads‘ “Psycho Killer.” While the bassline is iconic, when other instruments are placed over it, it sounds like pretty much any other percussive bassline. What is missing in the narrative is that Gomez may have just released the song of the summer. “Bad Liar” is quirky pop at its best. While Gomez has a great singing voice, it’s not necessary for the song. Most of the song finds her rhythmically talking over handclaps. The song is undoubtedly pop but it still has an edginess like an Amber Coffman sung Dirty Projectors‘ song. Besides an odd use of “serpentine” as a verb (not unheard of use but uncommon), the track is nearly perfect.
