Stephen Chopek recently released Songs of Shane, Vol. 2, the follow up to his first tribute to Shane MacGowan of the Pogues fame. Chopek said he decided to make Vol. 2 while watching Julien Temple’s 2020 documentary, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan. When he heard the intro to “Gabrielle” by Shane’s first band The Nips, Stephen felt compelled to record an updated version.
The instrumentation changes a bit but “Gabrielle” is largely faithful to the original. The biggest difference is the shine of modern recording. It is a little less dingy sounding, instead brighter and in technicolor.
