#TuesdayTop10: Giant Songs

new york, giants, superbowlWith the New York Giants invigorating win in Superbowl XLVI, I knew I had to do a Superbowl related #TuesdayTop10. A top 10 of New York songs seemed a little played out so I thought I would go with Giant songs.

10. The Astroid Galaxy Tour “One Giant Freak For Mankind”
This song sounds like it was written for Giants fans. “Lost my mind/I love you” pretty much describes every Giants’ fans reaction on Sunday night.

09. Pigeon John “Sleeping Giants”
Racking my creative mind, I can find no way to twist Pigeon John‘s lyrics to pretend that they are about the New York Giants. “Sleeping Giants” is just a fly song with Giants in the title.

08. The Planet Smashers “Giants”
Unlike Pigeon John’s “Sleeping Giants,” it is pretty easy to twist The Planet Smashers’ “Giants” lyrics into being about the New York Giants. “There were Giants standing over all” sounds pretty fitting right now.

07. Gatsby’s American Dream “The Giant’s Drink”
I don’t think they did before the game, but after I bet many a Giant drank. Although after the world series you see champaign popping in the club house, you never see that in football. Is there drinking in the locker room after the Superbowl? Any NFL players reading this that can answer this question?

06. Big K.R.I.T. “As Small As Giants”
It is hard to twist Big K.R.I.T.’s track about his impoverished upbringing into being about football. Krit raps “couldn’t play with those kids” which was true of the Patriots but that feels like a pretty big stretch. Still, it is a solid track.

05. Mastadon “Sleeping Giant”
I am pretty sure Mastadon is describing the scene at UMass Amherst in their track “Sleeping Giant.” They sing “Earth has burst/Mountain flames.” Stay classy Amherst.

04. You Can Be a Wesley “Giants”
What are the chances that Boston-based indie pop band, You Can Be a Wesley regret writing a song called “Giants” now? Also, I bet I am miss hearing lyrics but I swear the first line is “Manning, Giants, blacktop, plays for the Colts.” I defy someone to tell me the lyrics are different.

03. John Coltrane “Giant Steps”
Sometimes I watch TV on mute while listening to music. The best is watching football while listening to bebop jazz. John Coltrane‘s “Giant Steps” makes an awesome soundtrack to a fumble or to a quarterback scramble. Like the last play of the game where Brady scrambles and then throws that hail mary to no one, this is the perfect soundtrack for.

02. Death Cab For Cutie “We Looked Like Giants”
I never took Ben Gibbard as much of a sports fan but then I listened to Death Cab for Cutie’s “We Looked Like Giants.” At first, the track sounds like it is about the sexual exploration of adolescents but then in the fourth verse he sings “we looked like Giants/in our white and blue jerseys.” Ben Gibbard really gets it!

01. Ill Bill “Giants Stadium”
Out of all the songs on the countdown, only one of them is referencing the correct Giants and that is Ill Bill‘s “Giants Stadium.” Of course, the song was released before the new Giants stadium was open but that does not matter. The Giants Ill Bill is referencing in the song is the same Eli lead Giants that won the Superbowl Sunday night.
