Various Artists: Horse Meat Disco III
As far as London DJ collectives go, none is more famous or acclaimed as Horse Meat Disco. The third installment of their compilation series is their most ambitious yet. Spanning almost three hours of music on two CDs, the compilation brings the listener right into the London club scene with lost dance classic.
The first disc largely deals with classic salsoul reworked by some of today’s hottest DJs. Oslo DJ, Todd Terje edits Claudja Barry‘s 1976 single “Sweet Dynamite” into a four minute, high energy funk instrumental. Dimitri From Paris‘ new project Erodiscotique with DJ Rocca has their track “Downtown” featured. The six minute dance tune fits right into the mix with its talking synth and disco drums.
The second disc takes the energy down a notch. It is mostly populated with mid-tempo sleeze featuring such artists as Sylvester, Wham!, Idris Muhammad, The Salsoul Orchestra, Baiser, T.S. Monk, Rose Laurens, and Gene Chandler. Unlike the first disc, disc two contains almost no remixes or edits. The only exception to this is Mark Kamins who remixes Miquel Brown‘s “Reach For Love.”
The second disc feels much slower than the first disc when the two are compared back to back but it does have its own place as a stand alone listen. Because the two CDs have very little in common with each other, it seems like Horse Meat Disco should have just broken the them up into two separate volumes.
