New: California Wives “Marianne”
California Wives are currently in the midst of wrapping up their debut full-length album (release date and title still to-be-announced). Despite being unfinished, they have released one of the finished tunes to give the public a little taste of what to expect. “Marianne” is an energetic track that mixes the pathos of dreamwave with the catchiness indie pop. Also you have to love the 80s-style reverbed and echoed piano hits.
New: Johnny Mac “Space Jam 2012 (Quad City DJs // Wolfgang Gartner // Laidback Luke // Kaskade // Skrillex)”
DJ Johnny Mac just sent me his new bootleg, “Space Jam 2012.” For people my age, Space Jam was a cultural phenomenon. It featured the worlds most famous basketball players, cartoon characters, Bill Murray, and an original soundtrack packed with hits. Johnny Mac takes one of those hits, Quad City DJs‘ “Space Jam,” and turns it into an electro banger.
New: Hey Sholay “Burning”
British band, Hey Sholay are preparing to release their new single, Burning in June. The single is now streaming on their soundcloud. The track’s shimmering synths are reminiscent of Animal Collective but the driving beat makes it seem a little more rock-y.
New: Videoing “Night Watch”
Austin, TX band, Videoing are preparing to release their debut album, Reader on July 10th. The album’s lead single is “Night Watch.” The track reminds me a little of Cake except replace the rockabilly influences with post-punk influences like Pere Ubu or Gang of Four. Oh, and a female lead singer!

New: Lightouts covers The Cure “Push”
Brooklyn’s Lightout are preparing to release their new single, “The Big Picture.” As with their previous singles, the b-side is going to be a cover. This time the band takes on the Cure‘s classic “Push.” The first half of the song is completely instrumental but when the vocals do kick in, they remind of At the Drive In spinoff, Sparta.
